Why Distance Programs Order These
A team sock has to do more than a regular one. It has to fit a roster of different sizes, match everyone's colors all season, and hold up to the sport it's built for. Here's what's actually going on inside ours.
What Distance Running Asks of a Sock
Distance running needs a different sock than a field sport does. There is no cleat pressure and no pad shifting, which sounds easier until you consider what actually ends a runner's season. It is rarely a dramatic injury. It is a blister at mile two of a meet, or a sock that slipped down on a wet course and turned a good race into a survival exercise.
Ankle and footie are what most cross country programs order, cut lower and lighter than our football and soccer styles. The construction underneath is the same: reinforced heel and toe, moisture wicking knit into the fiber, and an arch compression band that holds its shape rather than stretching out by October.
